Why does anti cancer drug treatment lead to hair loss and nausea

Why does anti cancer drug treatment lead to hair loss and nausea?
I need help with a paper. Many anti cancer drugs are directed at either stabilizing or destabilizing the tubulin protein that makes up microtubules and are very effective in treating cancer.....so why the hair loss and nausea?

The hair loss is due the chemicals killing all rapidly growing sells, not just the cancerous cells, and your hair is one of those kinds of cells, chemo is not specific for cancerous cells, just rapidly growing cells, I can't think of the name for it. As for nausea, it is b/c you are basically poisoning yourself, but for the betterment of your health.
2 :
Vitamin B-17 is the ultimate cancer fighting therapy. Of course the government will put you in jail if you use it for your patients. It has been banned by the fda. Why? Because it cures cancer and it would eliminate a billion dollar industry.
3 :
these treatments and antibiotics wil make you body so acidic that will happen. your body should remain alkaline so it can repair itself so check your urine or saliva for acidity. litmus paper can be bought in a roll
4 :
It's correct that these drugs have their greatest effect on cell types which reproduce most rapidly. Hair follicle cells, and those in the lining of your gastrointestinal tract all the way from the inside of your lips to the, um, other end fall into that catagory. That being said, different protocols with the same cancer drugs can affect a person differently. I had chemo in three sets. The first set, done "IV bolus push" over five days, caused the hair loss and GI inflammation. Most unpleasant. The second and third sets (same dosage) were done weekly for six weeks, IV infusion, and there were NO side effects at all!
5 :
Chemotherapy targets fast growing cancer cells. Most normal cells are specific to the organ and does not grow. Tumor cells are the uncontrolled growth of these cells. For some reason the signal to stop growing has been turned off in these cells . . thus the rapid growth. There are only a few other cell types in the body that grow and that includes hair cells and some cells in the gastrointestinal tract. The chemotherapy can not tell the difference between the hair cells and the cancer cells, so during chemo treatment all growing cells will die off. If the chemotherapy does its job the cancer tumors will die or shrink allowing surgery for removal. The hair will fall out, but this is only a temporary nuisance. Once chemotherapy stops the hair will grow back. Most people can tolerate the nausea caused from chemotherapy, but those who cannot can use medications to keep them comfortable. It's not pleasant, but chemotherapy is effective in killing cancer. Most chemotherapy protocols have been tested by extensive Clinical Trials and are backed by documented scientific evidence as to their benefit treating human cancers. The National Library of Medicine provides assess to millions of medical journals and documents through the years: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed

Breast cancer treatment what was your experience in waiting time for diagnositic test & treatment

Breast cancer treatment what was your experience in waiting time for diagnositic test & treatment?
I have been through the fight this yr. Just courious about others experience in their area.

I was blessed to be able to have the mammogram, ultrasound and needle biopsy all on the same day. It was the day before Memorial day weekend and my primary dr. doesn't work Tuesdays so the waiting for the results was horrible, even for 4 days. I couldn't sleep or eat. I can imagine for other people that have to wait days or weeks between diagnostic tests that it can be very stressful. I had surgery exactly one month after I was diagnosed and started chemo about one month later.
2 :
It seems right after I had my mammogram and they called me to come back for a second one, that everything after that went real fast. I had the biospy, surgery, and radiation. Now after a few months on Monday I'm going back to the radiologist for a follow up visit.
3 :
Went through it exactly 10 years ago. My experience was fine! I discovered a lump end of July, went to my doctor mid September (I waited to see if the lump grew). Next day I had a mammogram and immediately an ultrasound. The doctor who read the mammogram and did the ultrasound immediately recommended that I have a lumpectomy (rather than a needle biopsy). Saw a surgeon within 5 days. Had a lumpectomy on September 28. 4 days later I was told it was malignant and I needed another surgery. Second lumpectomy took place on October 10. Began radiation on October 25 for 6 weeks. Never had any problem with the radiation. Refused to have chemotherapy or take hormone replacement therapy. I trusted my body since it had warned me in time that I had cancer. Didn't want to mess up my internal clock. It has been ten years. I am still clear of cancer. Good luck
4 :
I went for my mammogram and the nurse came back in and showed me the spot. Took more pictures and did a ultra sound. A week later the needle biopsy. I waited 3 days for the result and it was cancer. A week later consult with the surgeon another 3 days the 2nd consult (he wanted to make sure I had time to digest what he told me). Partial mastectomy a week later. Now I am done with chemo (6 month later) and will start radiation. even though I think things moved rather quickly, every day of waiting is torture. Especially when you just been told you have cancer. These tests take time especially when they figure out what kind of cancer it is and the hormone receptors. I was told that for instance the Her2 test takes a long time because they literally watch it grow.

What is combined modality treatment for breast cancer

What is combined modality treatment for breast cancer?
Can you explain that to me please? For the intial stage of breast cancer that is.
Cancer - 4 Answers

Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
for intial stage of breast cancer, u may, kindly, consult a local homoeopath. with best compliments from www.saioam.com
2 :
The lump and maybe surrounding tissue and lymph nodes are removed (surgical modality). If lymph nodes are cancerous then radiation (another modality) and chemo are used.
3 :
The latest American Cancer Society data indicates that 89% of newly diagnosed breast cancers are now cured with current therapy which is usually combined modality, so I STRONGLY suggest NOT using homeopathic treatment for a deadly disease that is now so often cured with mainstream therapy. Most primary breast cancers are now treated with lumpectomy and radiation therapy - two modalities - 1. surgery and 2. radiation. [Mastectomy is much less common today.] A third modality 3. Chemotherapy - drugs usually given by vein that can kill cancer cells throughout the body - is recommended if the primary breast cancer shows signs that suggest a significant possibility of microscopic distant spread of the malignant cells. Added note - I should correct that the 89% figure is for five year survivals which is not truly a "cure" for breast cancer since it can come back after five years in some cases - - But, it is necessary to have an initial five year disease free interval to eventually realize a "cure." We do not know about "cures" for sure until maybe 20 years have gone by. Clearly the vast majority of stage I and II breast cancers patients are cured with current combined modality therapy. I would suggest homeopathic therapy for pancreatic cancer, advanced non-small cell lung cancers, and other types of cancer for which rational, scientific, modern medicine has no good treatment.
4 :
combined modality treatment means combinations of all modalities...the modalities for cancer are surgery , radiotherapy and chemo. These are used one after the other for a breast cancer. for initial stage patient is taken up for surgery first If breast conservation surgery done then radiotherapy follows surgery which is followed by chemo. otherwise after total removal of breast or mastectomy chemo only. followed by hormonal therapy depending on hormonal status

you'll have to check your individual coverage. you should be able to logon to your local bcbs, check the back of your insurance card or you can use the link below to find yours. once there you should be able to access your account information and coverage online with your member id and ssn. you can also review past paid or pending claims to review your copays etc. other than that you can call the 800 # on the back of your card and speak to a rep. you may also ask to speak to a nurse or someone in utilization management. good luck to you
2 :
the hospital should have a nutritionist that would help you with your meal selections as part of the cancer treatment They usually have booklets that you follow.

What is the treatment for skin cancer when removal doesn't work

What is the treatment for skin cancer when removal doesn't work?
I have heard that the treatment is better than in the past. Is this true?
Cancer - 3 Answers

Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
There are a variety of second line treatment options - the best choice depends on the type of cancer cells, where the cancer is located, and partly on the patient's preference. Second line treatment options include freezing tissues, drying out tissues with electricity, radiation, and chemotherapy. The newer treatments are better mainly in the sense that they are more narrowly focused on the cancer cells than chemotherapy or radiation, so they kill fewer healthy cells.
2 :
That really depends on what skin cancer you're referring to. All cancer treatments are better today than in the past. If it's basal cell, removal always works.
3 :
I think they said when removal doesn't' work. Treatment options depend on the following: The stage of the cancer (whether it has spread deeper into the skin or to other places in the body). The type of cancer. The size and location of the tumor. The patient̢۪s general health. For the conventional treatment of skin cancer and for the alternative treatment of skin cancer, see links below. My advice to anyone is, try to be as strong as you can possibly be in mind body and spirit, stop smoking and boost up your natural cancer fighting cells by eating more vegetables. It has been proven to help many of us that have had and beat cancer.

5 :
Are you sure of your friends diagnosis. Ulcerative colitis is not cancer and is not normally treated with chemotherapy or radiation. The answer though about successful treatment for cancer other than chemo or radiation, is yes, there are other modalities depending upon the type of cancer and its location not to mention the health and age of the patient. Other treatments could be surgery, radiofrequency ablation, hyperthermic chemoperfusion, limb perfusion, cyberknife, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy, biological therapy, bone marrow or stem cell transplants, gene therapy, laser therapy, photodynamic therapy - all which may be used in combination as a 'multi-modality' of treatments. Other options include clinical trials and experimental treatments.

What is the best treatment for prostrate cancer

What is the best treatment for prostrate cancer?
Should i have the prostrate removed by the De Vincie method or use the radiation seeds. I have been given a hormone shot to slow the cancer down and am taking hormone pills to reduce the size of the prostrate.
Cancer - 4 Answers

1 :
Dunno... sorr to hear about it though.
2 :
TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR PROSTRATE CANCER? The treatment options for prostate cancer depend in part on whether the tumor has spread. For tumors that are still inside the prostate, radiation therapy (using x-rays that kill the cancer cells) and a surgery called radical prostatectomy are common treatment options. "Watchful waiting" is also a treatment option. In this approach, no treatment is given until the tumor gets bigger. Watchful waiting may be the best choice for an older man who has a higher risk of dying from something other than his prostate cancer. Generally, tumors that have grown beyond the edge of the prostate can't be cured with either radiation or surgery. They can be treated with hormones that slow the cancer's growth. The traditional cancer treatments Surgery, Chemotheraphy and Radiation therapy can be given for Prostrate cancers also but everything depends on the stage of the disease and various other medical aspects. -
3 :
Those are probably not your only options. I recommend looking into protons, HIFU, and traditional radiation (IMRT, IGRT, Tomotherapy, Cyberknife etc) in addition to surgery or seeds. There are pros and cons to all treatments. To make an educated decision, you should consider your pathology (Gleason, PSA) as well as your age, and what is important to you in terms of side effects and effectiveness. Leave no stone unturned. It's not that there's anything wrong with Da Vinci or seeds, but there are other options out there you should be aware of, because this is potentially your one big shot to get rid of it. I recommend getting the book "Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer" (2007 ed) and checking out the eHow Guide "How to Choose the Best Prostate Cancer Treatment for YOU" at: http://www.ehow.com/how_5308649_prostate-cancer-treatment.html Best wishes.

How do you bring platelets up to have proper treatments for cancer.

No
2 :
Neumega is a daily injection that kind of squeezes the bones to get those platlets out. I used neupogen (for white cells), which is very similar to neumega, and would have used the neumega to help continue with my treatments if I weren't allergic to it.
3 :
A cancer diet needs a good balance of minerals because minerals are needed by all cells for proper function. Patients are often found to be mineral deficient, so this is an area of the diet that needs particular attention. There are two classes of minerals. Macrominerals, such as the well known calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and phosphorus, and microminerals, such as boron, chromium, copper, iron, iodine, germanium, sulfur, silicon, vanadium, zinc, manganese and molybdenum. The good news is we will get most of the minerals we need, provided we are eating a diet based on a wide variety of fruits and veggies, with the addition of nuts, seeds and grains. Where we can get in to trouble is that minerals are washed out of soils with constant rain, and modern fertilizers don't usually contain the wide variety of minerals we need. Organic gardeners usually use rock minerals on their soils and this results in organic produce have a much higher and broader range of minerals. Germanium is one micromineral that cancer patients are often low on. It is essential for immune function and is critical to tissue oxygenation. Cancer grows rapidly where there is low oxygenation of cells. Germanium is found in broccoli, celery, garlic, onions, rhubarb, sauerkraut and tomato juice as well as aloevera and ginseng. Iodine deficiency has been linked to breast cancer in more than one study. Seasalt contains iodine and a variety of minerals rather than the isolated highly processed iodine additive in table salt. Asparagus, garlic, lima beans, soybeans, sesame seeds all contain natural iodine along with the nutrients needed for good absorption. Large amounts of brassicas eg brussels sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower, along with peaches, pears and spinach can block absorption of iodine, so ensure there is a balance of iodine rich foods in your diet. Selenium has been linked to cancer. Selenium and Vitamin E work together to attack free radicals. Selenium is critical for pancreatic function, and pancreatic enzymes are critical to the bodies ability to fight tumour activity. This mineral is generally found in meat and grains, however countries such as New Zealand and much of America is known to have selenium deficient soils. http://www.cancer.2microworld.com/

I've never heard of that. So I would say no try asking your doctor or going online.

If healthcare is better in other countries, why did Ted Kennedy choose cancer treatment here in the US

If healthcare is better in other countries, why did Ted Kennedy choose cancer treatment here in the US?
<cant wait for the spin on this one> Youre dead wrong, it most definitely IS about the level of care!
Politics - 27 Answers

1 :
It's not about the level of care, it's about access.
2 :
That's going to be tough to argue with. He sure as hell didn't go to Canada for their excellent care. It IS about the level of care! The current public option on the table would provide nowhere near the level of care that Congress receives!!!
3 :
We have the best care money can buy, the funny thing is that you think you can afford that care.
4 :
Out of patriotism. Note that American health care failed him - he's dead due to doctors greed.
5 :
It's more the access to it, not having to go through HMOs and such.
6 :
He's a rich elitist. He can afford expensive private doctors while he advocates that the rest of us peasants get on the public plan.
7 :
He figured he might as well get some get Private Healthcare then get rationed like everywhere else? How do you take care of 50million more people with the Current # of doctors?
8 :
The same reason why most people receive health care in their own countries. Oh! And Kennedy received government provided health care. He lived a long time. And, the health care debate is not concerned with the quality of the facilities, rather it is the quality of the insurance which allows access to them.
9 :
I am not sure his life insurance includes expenses at Swiss clinics Besides drugs are everywhere the same. The only difference is that you guys pay more for your doctors and drugs and have uninsured people.
10 :
Probably because he's a member of Congress, and they get the best PUBLIC CARE already available to them... Conservative Congress, isn't against public healthcare options...they are against public healthcare options for YOU AND ME !
11 :
His insurance bureaucrats would not let him go outside the network.
12 :
Because Medicare only works in the US. Why pay forhealth caree when it free here?
13 :
It's not better! If Teddy was a "regular" person in another country, he would have had to wait for treatment!
14 :
Why did Farrah Faucet keep leaving the country for treatment?
15 :
he's dead though, maybe if he was here in the UK using our socialized health care service he would have lived longer, especially seeing as our life expectancy is longer.
16 :
He gets it for free and we have the best cancer care. People come here from all over the world because we are the best. Peace
17 :
Their health care is considered better mostly due to the access of preventive care, if he would have been Canadian he would feel like 40 at 77...
18 :
.
19 :
Because this whole issue is not about health care...it's a power grab by the left to take over this free country and socialize it.
20 :
Nobody says its better in other countries. The insurance system in the US sucks, not the care. So it is you who are applying the spin. I understand opposing Obama's plan, but anyone who goes with the "system is fine as is" argument is off their rocker.
21 :
His job is in the US... but setting that aside, health care here is excellent...for some. Kennedy included. It is horrible for others. That's the problem.
22 :
He was filthy rich and could afford the best treatment in the world. Where did he go to get his treatment? humm...Your question kinda answers itself. Good job. It's Bush's fault though remember.
23 :
Like the rest of us in a free America, he had a CHOICE! So let's "do it for Teddy" and give us all the same CHOICE and leave government dictation out of it.
24 :
Ted Kennedy had the best health insurance available in the USA, said health insurance subsidized by the taxpayers, why would he go to another country? Kennedy wanted to continue to appear in the Senate as long as he could. Considering that he had the best care available in the USA there was no need for him to go to another country. Americans who are denied care by their health insurance companies cannot afford to go to another country for treatment, can you? Level of care? From personal experience I received A+ care in three hospital stays in Western Europe all socialized health care. Spin that!
25 :
He's a Kennedy. That's the only reason he was a lifetime senator. I hope he enjoyed his life of luxury on his families dollar and OURS. Sucks, but there was no way he would be given less than the best possible health care... after all he was a political icon. He knew where he wanted to get the best care, right here in the good ol' USA!
26 :
Duh! because he lives here and he could afford it!!! But what he wanted for everyone else was to have healthcare as a fundamental right not as a privilege. Try going to one of those free health fares that travel around the US, and see people queuing up for two days like they do in Africa, hoping to get treatment they so desperately need but can't afford. Or as one doctor put it, the third world is here in America!

How much does thyroid cancer treatment cost

How much does thyroid cancer treatment cost?

Cancer - 3 Answers

CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR.
2 :
probably the minimum expense would be $100,000. Figure all the testing costs a fortune, that is untold doctor's visits and various kinds of x-rays, scans, and biopsies. If you need any kind of chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation then add about $50,000 to each of those (minimum) Not to mention all the types of drugs that could be prescribed for the diagnosis. For example: Breast cancer cost us over $350,000 plus since the diagnosis (closer to $400,000). That is why we cannot allow cancer to bankrupt citizens of this country in fighting this terrible disease. Whatever kind of cancer you have, if caught early has a great survival rate. For instance breast cancer stage 1 has about a 95% or better rate of survival with proper treatment. Without insurance the survival rate drops to 52%. Why? Because the patients cannot afford either the treatments, medications, or follow up examinations necessary to fight the disease.
3 :
You can easily check your minimal health care rates in internet, for example here - health-quotes.isgreat.org
4 :
I racked up over $120,000 in bills in 4 months. I had multiple ultrasounds, an ultrasound guided Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy, those cost close to $3,000. My surgery was more extensive than first planned, so it ended up costing more than $75,000. I had radioactive iodine (I-131) for my follow up treatment, two sets of scans, multiple ultrasounds, CT scans, countless blood tests/ tumor markers...the list goes on! It's been 20 months since my first diagnosis, and I think my current tab is $150,000 and counting.

Why do people freak when I say if I get colon cancer im most likely going to refuse treatment

Why do people freak when I say if I get colon cancer im most likely going to refuse treatment?
I have UC and a history of colon cancer in my family. After seeing what they went through I don't feel its worth spending my life savings just to go through that mess. My family says they understand my wishes. Is there anyway I can make sure nobody forces me to get treatment?

As long as you are of sound mind. No one can force treatment on you. Just to make sure you could write it out and have it notarized and filed with your attorney like right now. So they could not say the mental anguish of the cancer is clouding his judgment. I am with you though. If I have like a 10% of living. Why put my self and family through it. But when the time comes, the will to live is pretty strong.
2 :
As long as your are classed as mentally stable then no one can force treat you, if you are classed as mentally unstable and someone tells hospitals and doctors they can treat you. best thing to do is make it clear from the start, or even write a note or letter and put it somewhere safe with all the information on it. that may help.
3 :
you write up a living will you tell your doctor and let them tell you what to do
4 :
we don't know what we are going to dai from. so don't be negative don't give up from the start. even saying it is said to have an influence. If you are living a healthy life now, as you should, the quality of your life, which you will live anyway, will be better and then you may live a long life and have all the fun you wanted to have, and then you may also dai cuz of another illness, who knows?? talking about this issue doesn't help. so chose between happy life and a miserable one, after all you are free and no body can force you.
5 :
If you are a competent adult, they cannot do it. Even if you are not an adult, you can of course refuse to go to the doctor. I suffered from UC for a number of years. I had my colon removed because I was not responding to medication, and was on a downward spiral. Even though I had my colon removed, there is about 1" left that connects the small intestine to my anus (I do not have an ostomy-the doctor did what is called a j pouch). I still get that regularly checked, because I know I am at a higher risk for colon cancer than others. It's worth it as 'preventive maintenance.' You should have regular colonoscopies, and because of your disease and family history, you should get them much more frequently than others. You should be going to a gastroenterologist, and that doctor should be a member of the CCFA-if not, find another. Focus on early detection, and you have a LOT more options. Good luck.
6 :
I̢۪m not sure why you think anyone could force you into treatment, but I also do not understand why you would rather wait for the tumor to perforate the colon and die of septic shock. That would be a long and painful death, not the way I want to go.

I believe in that your over all out look on life is manger factor on how long you live. There are many alternative way to treat cancer with out chemo check out the page below.
3 :
Depends on the person and the extent of the stage iv. I was told I had 2-4 months without treatment, perhaps a year with chemo.. I've so far survived 3 years with stage iv, with the help of two cycles of chemo.
4 :
it depends on the age and the current health of the patient but when I googled it, it said 50% of people with stage 4 don't usually last more than 8 months - my dad had lung cancer 6 years ago and luckily they caught it before stage 4 and removed half of his lung and he recovered age 73 but developed bowel cancer 3 years later and we were told possibly 6 months to 1 year but he was dead within 6 weeks of diagnoses.
5 :
This is so hard to answer because you don't mention any medical details like the age of the patient, and other medical problems (diabetes, congestive heart disease, kidney failure, etc.) the extent of the cancer in the lung, any metastasis to other areas, and if it is an aggressive type or not.In general lung cancers can go for more than a year but some types if aggressive will only last 3 months at most. If he has stage 4 now with mets to the brain or bone already, and has increased difficulty of breathing & is relying on O2 and morphine, it could only be a few weeks. Like I said, it all depends. Sorry.
6 :
it depends on how aggressive the cancer is and our good lord above. faith goes a long way when cancer strikes us.i have had breast cancer now 3 years that has mestastise to my bones. my x-husband also has cancer but his orginated in his bone over 6 years ago and he is still going. dealing with lots of pain but no one knows but god,
7 :
I believe a great portion of it is up to the person with the cancer. If you have the will to live and want to beat cancer, the fight will come natural. A positive attitude and way of living is a big part as well.... Like I have been telling my husband who has stage IV brain cancer......IV is nothing but a number. We have been battling his cancer since 01/06/07.
8 :
Doctor's start worrying when cancer has reached Stage 3. The only one who can adequately diagnose this is a medical doctor. Don't rely on any lay people to do this for you. I had stage 1 endometrial cancer and that means it hasn't spread yet. They were able to catch it in it's early stages and I had surgery. Stage 4 means basically the patient will be a goner no matter what the treatment. But then again my sister had Stage 4 Breast Cancer and she had her breast removed and still here. Good luck.
9 :
As you have seen, it will certainly vary on the person. My mom had stage iv, and with treatment she lived for 2 more years.
10 :
Too many variables. Why type of cancer -- small cell or large cell would make a big difference. Also age and health of the patient - will determine how the immune system can fight off certain things. I have seen people die rapidly with and without treatment. The treatment can be as debilitating as the disease. Best thing you can do is ask your doctor. Even he won't be able to give you exact, only a range.

Public hospitals versus Private hospitals in Singapore ( cancer treatment)

Public hospitals versus Private hospitals in Singapore ( cancer treatment)?
In Singapore, which ones, public hospital or private hospital, is better for serious disease treatment (for example cancer). Private one has better services for sure. Yet does public one benefit from big state-owned research centers (like NUH), which is an important factor in serious disease treatments?

What treatment for cancer is done to poison the tumor

What treatment for cancer is done to poison the tumor?
Any fit this description. I need the answer for a Finals Review Sheet for my psych class.

Isn't it kimo therapy? I think it's kimo since they use the radiation to kill the cancerous cells
2 :
Chemotherapy.
3 :
high does of radiation treatments (chemotherapy) are done. Some do a few treatments and some do more than a few. Those who don't like doctors try the natural route and buy a juicer. Be strict about your fruits and vegetables. Do like that old man did on t.v. He had cancer and was told he had a short time to live. He bought a juicer and has been healthy ever since.
4 :
How about the ones answering you, learn that chemotherapy is NOT radiation. Those are the TWO treatments, with surgery to remove as much tumor as possible first. Many times, radiation is given with a lower dose of chemo to make any cancer cells left, more suseptible to the radiation effects..Then a higher dose of chemo is often given to kill any cancerous cells that were not destroyed by radiation.. That's not how it is for ALL cancer treatments, but it was for mine..

I am looking for a hat that you use during cancer treatment to prevent hair loss

I am looking for a hat that you use during cancer treatment to prevent hair loss?
It is a cap or hat that you put on during the treatment; it is not a hat to cover my head. Someone told me that it was on a medical show but she does not remember the name. It is not a hat to cover my head it is medical thank you

I am not sure I understand your question. You are looking for a hat, while you are in cancer treatment? loosing your hair, will depend on the treatment you are taking, QUIMOTERAPHY is the one that makes you loose your hair during treatment, altough, when you finish it, it will grow back. Radiation or Surgery will not make your hair fall. So if you are under treatment and you are loosing hair, I think the type of hat or cap depends on you taste. I hope is useful.
2 :
There is no hat that I know of to prevent hair loss during chemo treatment but pull-over ski caps look nice and are warm. You might also try a wig if you are so inclined. Good luck on your treatment.
3 :
i this the large brimmed hats you work very well. heres an example: there is a hat a JCPenny callled a "beach floppy hat" it is really cute and it is only $24. It comes in black, natural, lime green, pink, watermelon, and white Hope this helps!
4 :
Nothing I know of will prevent the loss but look for the turban tops like you wrap a towel over your hair. They come in assorted colors. Look in Walgreens, Walmart, or Kmart. Any body else know where to look? I just was told Eckerds drugstores. I have a friend who has lost her hair and I told her I would shave my hair if she would feel more comfortable having a bald friend to hang out with.
5 :
I was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma bone cancer 25 years ago. I did 2 years of chemo & 6 weeks of radiation. Back then the hat you are talking about was called an ice cap. My doctor was a jerk and when I asked him about it he said I couldn't use it because they wanted the chemo to go everywhere in the body. I'm not sure if they still have or use these ice caps. I have no idea where to find them or if they are still call them ice caps. I did not get to use one and was bald for two years. It really wasn't all that bad.
6 :
NO NO NO! Do not use such a cap. Studies have shown that using these caps increases the risk that your cancer will spread to the brain. That is why you cannot find these anymore. The theory is that it contracts the blood vessels and the chemotherapy drug cannot reach your skull. I don't think they work for hair loss anyway. Hair loss is not immediate, it happens days even weeks after treatment.

Looking for a cancer alternative treatment

Looking for a cancer alternative treatment?
My sister has advanced breast cancer and she already tried several rounds of chemo but cancer came back. So I'm looking for a cancer alternative treatment or something additionally that can be done. Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks

1 :
If chemo didn't fix her breast cancer situation the next (and obvious) step has to be to get a mastectomy. Prosthetic breasts are available and even if she can't afford them at least them come without the big CANCER tag.
2 :
What the superior brain Andrew, obviosly is not aware of, is that with advanced breast cancer, surgery usually preceeds chemo and radiation, so a mastectomy has probably already been performed. Sorry but I have no suggestions beyond what her oncologist may suggest. Stay strong for your sister, I know how hard this can be.
3 :
I'm sorry to hear that. Like Tarkarri, I can't suggest anything other than what your sister's medical team recommend. All I want to do here is to caution you against anyone who answers telling you they know a sure-fire cure, whether it be diet, apricot seeds or whatever. While anything that makes her feel better and gives her hope is a good thing, bear in mind that in this context 'alternative; is just another word for 'unproven'. If an alternative medicine had been proven to work, it would no longer be 'alternative medicine'; it would just be 'medicine'. And because some of the alternatives people recommend can be dangerous, it might be as well to do a search on this site for some facts before trying any: http://www.quackwatch.org/ My best wishes to your sister, and to you; I know how hard it is to watch someone you love go through this, and I've had breast cancer myself
4 :
Sorry to hear about your sister Eli. You will probably get responses for people suggesting some herbs and other stuff, I say most of them will be worthless, some might help. The problem is you'll never really know and waste money. I agree with lo_mcg to check out quackwatch. A lot of people associate 'alternative' with 'unproven', which is not necessarily right, it just means a different or new way. Many of todays treatments were considered once as alternative medicine. Mastectomy is an option of course if not done already, but there this cancer alternative treatment, which is in fact gene therapy for cancer. They do a combination treatment depending on status and type of cancer, including Biological Therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Injections of Gendicine (Gene Therapy Drug). Gendicine is approved drug in China for treating all kinds of solid tumors and they have already treated several hundreds of patients successfully. Canadian friends of mine already went to China for the second time, because first of all they saw success after the first treatment and secondly they believe in Gene Therapy and the doctors in China more than their local doctors, just because they are more honest. You can get more info either here: http://www.cancer-alternative.org/gene-therapy-for-cancer/ or this is the hospital in China, where they do that treatment: http://www.phoenixcancercentre.com/ All the best and good luck to your sister.
5 :
The best treatment and her only chance of survival is to see her oncologist and see what other options there are for her. There are clinical studies she may be able to participate in. Don't go for the mumbo jumbo and put her life at risk. There is nothing one can eat, nothing that can be put on skin in any form that will cure of her cancer. Her only hope is using the traditional methods.

What are the effects of radio therapy treatment for cancer on males

What are the effects of radio therapy treatment for cancer on males?
What sort of changes to the reproductive system can you expect?

Reduction in prostate size, additional treatment will also reduce testosterone and may reduce sex drive. http://omeath.ie/blog
2 :
Well if he had radiation to his brain, it would have no effect, so you should maybe clarify your question..
3 :
That all depends on the area of Treatment. I had Radiation therapy to my head. I was diagnosed with a grade 4 brain tumor. Which was the size of a 20 ounce bottle. The worst you can probably Expect is sterility. It won't effect you any other way. You'll just need to take extra precautions if should decide to become sexually active again. for the women's safety because of the radiation and possible chemotherapy in your system.

Do prisoners in the USA get medical care for chronic conditions such as cancer treatment

Do prisoners in the USA get medical care for chronic conditions such as cancer treatment?

Cancer - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
They do, but I'm betting its minimal treatment since the state is taking care of the bill.
2 :
This varies depending upon the state. Although prisoners are not to be subject to "cruel or unusual punishment" how a state manages their inmates medically varies considerably. Virginia for example, does an excellent job, sending some of them for cancer treatment at cutting edge hospitals whereas Michigan and Texas may not biopsy them or get them to a specialist quickly enough to even diagnose a cancer or other serious chronic issue. In the US all inmates are treated for medical problems, however how well they do it state to state is highly variable.
3 :
Yes.
4 :
Yes they do! In fact, even patients on death row get medical treatment! In 1976, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that prisoners were entitled to the same medical and dental treatment as everyone else in their community. Prisons that withhold necessary care from inmates can be held liable for violating constitutional bans against cruel and unusual punishment.

How has nuclear technology aided the treatment of cancer

How has nuclear technology aided the treatment of cancer?
I am doing an essay on this topic. Are there anyone out there who knows quite a bit of this stuff who could help me?
Cancer - 2 Answers

Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Nuclear technology is used extensively in the diagnosing and treatment of many different kinds of cancers. Diagnosing can involve x-rays, CAT scans, PET scans, MRIs, or injection of radioactive tracer chemicals that bind to tumors to highlight them during external scans. Treatment of cancers can involve exposing the tumor to high doses of radiation using either external sources of radiation or temporarily implanted radioactive "seeds". Experimental techniques have even been done where a diseased liver was removed, exposed to huge amounts of neutron radiation and then re-implanted back into the patient.
2 :
check out this research group someone on the message board will know http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/

It it common to delay treatment for BEP chemo for testicular cancer if the white blood count is low

It it common to delay treatment for BEP chemo for testicular cancer if the white blood count is low?
My son has stage 2A test cancer non sen....Is it common to delay treatment to see if his white blood count goes up?This would be his 2nd cycle. They don't want to raise it with medication. Does this change his prognosis. He has no tumor markings, however they saw something in his lymph nodes.
Cancer - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
yes it is common.
2 :
The reason they want his white blood cell count up is because the white blood cells fight infection. They are the warriors of the blood and when the count is low, he is at high risk of infection. So that's why they are waiting. His body should be producing higher white blood cells on their own. Hope this happens soon. God bless you and I pray your son gets better.
3 :
Yes I've heard that is very common....
4 :
In general, chemotherapy treatments are frequently delayed due to low WBC counts, so the other posters are correct for the "usual" cases.... However, in testicular cancer, we generally treat right through neutropenia. That is, no delays, and give therapy at day 22 come "hell or high water." Now, if the patient had some other toxicity or infection, that might delay things a little (but not much). Blessings

6 :
Iscador is a refined type of misseltoe that has helped in some cases but not fully tested. The best thing is to keep your body clean through fruit and veg and drink plenty of water and green tea.Oh and dont smoke drink or become obese.
7 :
TRY TAKING AN ORAL SOLUTION: IT IS CALLED: 35% FOOD GRADE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. I USE IT FAITHFULLY!! HAVE NOT HAD ANY SICKNESS FOR 10 YEARS!! THE FDA WILL NOT APPROVED THE HYDRO BECAUSE IT HAS THOUSANDS OF CURES. IT WOULD PUT THE PHARMACEUTICALS OUT OF BUSINESS!! cancer can not survive in a high oxygenated area. 35% food grade hydrogen is oxygen. try it! cured the lumps in my breasts. Source(s): GO TO www.guardianofeden.com here you can purchase hydro in 35% food grade form. plus tells you all the benefits you can do with it. It is labeled a HAZARDOUS MATERIAL. you have to use it exactally as the directions say!!!
8 :
green tea(or anything full of antioxidants) are a good way to help PREVENT cancer, but theres nothing really to help with cancer treatment(im guessing you mean chemo/raditation?)
9 :
marijuana. actually when you're all out of options. then yes mj.
10 :
Well...Getting plenty of magnesium and potassium can help with the pain sometimes, if that counts

Does the US offer better treatment for bone cancer, than chemo, or radiation

Does the US offer better treatment for bone cancer, than chemo, or radiation?
My Sister and my Mother have bone cancer, since they don't live in the US I often wonder if they would have better treatment then chemo, and radiation, if they lived here. Thank you.
Cancer - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Well, we do have the most Advanced Health Care in the World, I'd say so.
2 :
Medical treatment is highly standardized across the world. The exact same procedures, medications, and treatment offerings are available in Tokyo, Shanghai, London, New York, and every other major city. There is no difference.
3 :
Better? that is questionable, but quicker treatment options defiantly. BS Sherman thinks that making everyone wait six months for cancer treatments is better than the US one week .
4 :
Well..... I don't know where you live so I can't rate the treatment you will receive. There really isn't a whole lot of options besides chemo or radiation to treat cancer in the mainstream medical system in USA. Some patients are leaving the country to get alternative cures that the US does not recognize as legitimate therapy's. That being said- there are many other options available in the US.The real question is "BETTER" than chemo or radiation really better? I'm a Cancer survivor who owes his life to chemo and radiation therapy. It worked for me. Cancer Treatment Centers of America bases it's advertising on providing the most and best therapy's available for Cancer. I may be biased, being an American- but even so, the research I've done rates America's treatments, drugs, and general procedures a healthy cut above the rest of the world. I guess my best advice - based on my opinion- would be to go with the usual course of treatment prescribed , unless the prognosis or results were terminal.
5 :
generally speaking, surgery and radiation is the protocol sometimes with chemo added on top of those things. Research just hasn't gotten beyond that yet, unfortunately. However, depending on the hospital you're treated at, there may be clinical trials available. For information on clinical trials, visit clinicaltrials.gov

Why are researches on mitosis of importance to cancer treatment

Why are researches on mitosis of importance to cancer treatment?

Biology - 1 Answers

Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Because cancer can be considered a disease of mitosis. Cancer cells can be created by errors in cell reproduction, leading to more cancerous cells which go through the process of mitosis and reproduce, and so forth. A tumor can be thought of as cancer cells dividing (mitosis) and growing out of control. Some of the cancer therapies being researched today are those that prevent cancer cell reproduction, hence the process of mitosis is of central importance in those studies.
