Why does radiation treatment kill cancer

Why does radiation treatment kill cancer?
From what I understand from my science classes, radiation can cause cell mutation and thus cancer. If that is true, then why do they use radiation to treat cancer? Wouldn't it make the cancer worse? Also, what type of radiation do they use?

1 :
Radiation therapy works by destroying cells, either directly or by interfering with cell reproduction using high-energy X-rays, electron beams or radioactive isotopes. When a radiated cell attempts to divide and reproduce itself, it fails to do so and dies in the attempt. Normal cells are able to repair the effects of radiation better than are malignant and other abnormal cells. Thus, normal cells are able to recover from exposure to radiation and maintain integrity and viability better than malignant cells. If the dose and delivery of radiation are well chosen and the disease is localized to the region of treatment, the cancer dies, whereas the normal tissues survive and the patient is made well again. If fewer than all the cancer cells are killed, improvement may only be short lived and the cancer may regrow. Since normal tissues are less able to withstand the effects of further radiation, repeated treatments at a later date are seldom beneficial.
2 :
Typically, radiation therapy uses conventional x-rays at very high doses, but the radiation can also consist of heavy particles, i.e. protons, or other types of radiation. Ionizing radiation interferes with the normal mechanism of cellular division and introduces abnormal duplication of DNAs. These are known as mutations. Often mutations in cells lead to early cell death. But some types of mutation lead to abnormal cellular proliferations, these become cancer. Radiation at high enough doses such as the ones in radiation therapy cause so much damage to cells that cells die, cancerous or normal cells. As stated by earlier post, normal cells can better repair themselves than cancer cells. So the goal of radiation therapy is to repeatedly radiate at doses that will be sufficient to kill cancer cells, but allow normal cell to survive.

What is the average period of survival of cancer patients after treatment

What is the average period of survival of cancer patients after treatment?
How effective really is radiotherapy and chemotherapy in treating cancer, the rate of survival?

It depends on the type of cancer, it's progression and possibility for remission. I have know people to survive 20 years or more after treatments.
2 :
Some cancers are now curable. It depends on what type it is and how advanced it is. The diagnosis is not a death sentence, and we, as physicians, now speak of "living with cancer." Quality of life on chemo and radiation therapy is also much improved over what it used to be. Good luck!
3 :
You need to make sure that your body is operating at it's full potentail and is getting the right nutrients for the job. Get natural suppliments and eat healthy foods and your survival rate is greatly increased. The best natural suppliment is Tahitian noni juice. Plenty of information is on the internet about it.
4 :
The average is 5 years before reoccurance some are luckier some are not. For more info check the link below.
5 :
it all depends on what kind of cancer
6 :
Radiation and Chemo are the #1 and 2 things you do not want to do when it comes to cancer. We have reversed 54 forms of cancer since 1980 with nutrition. MIT calls our method Glycosylation. MIT has never endorsed anything dealing with nutrition. They also said what we have WILL change the world of health care.
7 :
It depends on the type of cancer. You should really talk to your Dr and ask him/her questions. That is what they are there for is not just to make you well but answer any questions that you have and if you don't feel comfortable with the answer they give you, you can always go somewhere else for a second opinion.
8 :
Every cancer is different and some more treatable than others. Also a lot depends on the general heath of the patient and the stage of the cancer. I had stage 3 testicular cancer that spread to my right lung and abdoman and had major surgery, and 2 transplants and I'm in good health today so I'm a survivor.

if i don't take the hep c treatment will i for sure get liver cancer

if i don't take the hep c treatment will i for sure get liver cancer?
I have found out i have hep c . I've known it since march 08 and i think i've had it for many, many years. My friend has it too, and she took the treatment years ago. Now she found out she has liver cancer, this is after taking good care of herself. So if she got liver cancer even after the treatment. Why should i do the treatment ? I've heard it was very difficult to do the treatment.

You should really discuss all of this with your doctor. It is not for sure that you will have liver cancer, or any complications. Some hep c drugs work for some people, while for others they don't. Treatment is difficult, but there are new drugs coming out that have less side effects. The good thing about treatment is that it can lengthen your life. Look into different types of therapy, like holistic and experimental treatment. But definitely discuss all these options with a good doctor (a specialist) and don't make a hasty decision about your health. Stay well!
2 :
Not everyone developes liver cancer- whether you've been treated for hcv or not. Go for the treatment and say clear of risk factors and you should be just fine! :O)

cut burn and poison is not a 'cure' for cancer. You are not looking for 'treatment' you are looking for 'money'.
2 :
Treatment is mainly surgery; chemotherapy may provide a temporary response. Long-term survival is poor.

It varies from person to person and can vary from the type of cancer. Bottom line is - if you have pre-cancerous cells, you need them removed as soon as possible.

Could there be a connection between colon cancer treatment and massive stroke

Could there be a connection between colon cancer treatment and massive stroke?
It happened to Gwenyth Paltrow's dad...he had colon cancer, overcame it and then passed from a massive heart attack. The same thing happend to my grandfather. Does anyone else know of a similar circumstance?

Having cancer puts a person in a hypercoagulable state meaning that they are more prone to forming blood clots. Many cancer patients develop deep vein thromboses and pulmonary emboli. They can also form clots that travel to the brain causing strokes or CVAs and clots to the heart such as a heart attack or MI.
2 :
It very well could be the toxic drugs (side effects) that the person took to treat the colon cancer. Pharmaceutical drugs are very dangerous, much more so than the diseases they're intended to cure. There are natural methods to treating every disease, even cancer, but the pharmaceutical industry and the government have a lot of money to make off these drugs; thus, the FDA approves them and we die from them.

who cares you little bitch
4 :
Some treatments in general can lead to a low defense state in your body and can cause another bad condition, because of that you have to follow all the instructions and preventions of your physician. for esample exposure to strong emotions is bad after any cancer treatment or during it.
