Mucositosis - not as a result of cancer treatment. Has anyone ever had this

Mucositosis - not as a result of cancer treatment. Has anyone ever had this?
I don't need explanations of what it is, I know all the medical stuff about it already, but what I don't know is HOW I got it. I wasnt in contact with anyone with it, I am not undergoing any cancer treatments. It's absolutely agonising and took forever to be properly diagnosed and treated. If you've had it, how long did it take you to recover, and does anyone know of any lasting damage than can be caused by not being treated until it had already spread throughout my entire digestive tract? My stomach still burns when i try to eat or just after....how long till all the ulcers are healed and should I still be on treatment if im still having symptoms (even if thye are very much mild compared to when i was diagnosed)?

What causes mucositis? The cells that line the digestive tract are rapidly producing. In other words, the life span of these cells is very short compared to other cells in the body. Chemotherapy agents do not differentiate between healthy cells and cancer cells. Because the digestive tract cells reproduce rapidly, the chemotherapy agents can destroy them quickly, breaking down the protective lining, leaving them prone to inflammation, irritation, and swelling. Mucositis can be even further complicated by nausea and vomiting that often occurs with treatment.

# The patient: Patients with cancer under age 20 or over age 50 are more likely to develop OM.2 Patients with kidney problems, diabetes or HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) also are at an increased risk of OM. In addition, those with oral problems or poor oral care habits, patients who use tobacco, and those who use alcohol also are at an increased risk.3 it apperas that you are in a bind sorry we can not help you more

Though the exact causes of non cancer mucositosis is not known, I may as well help you with some of the management options What can be done to manage the symptoms of mucositis? Mucositis may occur a week or longer after completion of therapy. Unfortunately, symptoms may not be preventable. There are things, however, you can do for your child to manage the pain including the following: For oral mucositis: Keep your mouth moist by encouraging him/her to drink plenty of fluids. Inspect your child's mouth daily with a flashlight to see if any ulcerations have developed or worsened. Oral hygiene should be done as often as four times a day: after each meal and before bedtime. Teeth should be brushed gently with a soft toothbrush. Mouthwashes that contain alcohol should be avoided. Your child's physician may prescribe a special mouthwash for your child. Avoid food with extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. Older children should not drink alcohol or smoke tobacco products. If the sores become very painful, your child's physician may be able to prescribe a numbing solution for the mouth or other analgesics (pain relievers). For diarrhea or rectal irritation: If your child has severe diarrhea, maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration. Keep the rectal area clean and dry. Change diapers frequently. Clean your child's skin with a mild soap. Your child's physician may recommend several barrier ointments or creams. For nausea and vomiting: Complications from nausea and vomiting have decreased during the last decade due to the development of several medications that greatly reduce these unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy. The following may help reduce or prevent nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy: Avoid spicy or greasy foods when nauseated. Your child may prefer a dark, quiet, cool environment when nauseated. Medications, called antiemetics, may be prescribed to offset the nausea. Treatment of mucositis from all causes is the same. The treatment will depend upon the severity of the symptoms you are experiencing and your white cell blood count. It is very important that your mouth is kept particularly clean. You should clean your mouth every four hours and at bedtime, more often if the mucositis becomes worse. You should use a soft bristle toothbrush to avoid damaging the lining of the mouth further. A water soluble jelly will help to lubricate the mouth. Rinse your mouth frequently with a bland rinse or plain sterile water. This helps to remove food particles and bacteria from your mouth, will moisten and soothe the lining of your mouth and gums and prevent crusts forming on any sores. A salt mouthwash is perhaps best. Do not use proprietary mouthwashes which often contain alcohol and will make the condition worse. Drink plenty of liquids, at least three litres a day, and avoid alcohol. Eat soft foods or moisten dry foods to make them softer and less rough on the sore areas. Avoid citrus or spicy foods which will aggravate the sore areas. Eat either cold or warm foods as hot foods may make symptoms worse. If you are a denture wearer, keep these out as much as possible between meals to avoid them rubbing on the sore areas. Smoking or use of any other tobacco products will slow recovery from mucositis. The pain from mucositis can vary from mild to severe. In mild cases topical pain relief such as gels or creams can be useful. For moderate pain, painkillers such as paracetamol may help to provide relief. Do not take aspirin if you are receiving chemotherapy as this may cause bleeding. In severe cases your doctor may prescribe stronger painkillers either by mouth or injection. Allopurinol and vitamin E have both shown some success in improving symptoms or eradicating mucositis. Complications The areas involved in mucositis may become infected and antibiotics may be needed to control the infection. There may be bleeding, usually only if you are undergoing chemotherapy. In severe cases there may be inability to breathe and eat normally. Always contact your doctor or call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 if: mouth sores become so painful you cannot eat or talk, mouth sores last longer than expected, or your temperature is over 38 degrees. .

I have no idea about their credentials. My bias would be to have any cancer treated at a university affiliated facility.
2 :
My dad was there [ briefly, and too late ] - they took excellent care of him, and were great to my family as well.

What is cancer treatment like

What is cancer treatment like?
I'm writing a paper and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what cancer treatment is like, from personal experience. If not, if anyone knows anything about it that would be very helpful. All I know is that radiation is involved. Also, what are they effects on the person after the treatment?

cancer treatment varies for each person, some people can have no side effects, others can have plenty, and brutal ones. Radiation is not always involved. I have CML (Leukemia) and i've been treated with 4 different types of chemotherapy (2 didn't work, currently on 2 that work well) and a bone marrow transplant, which my body rejected. Cancer treatment is long, it takes a lot of time, and you're tired afterwards, vomit, are weak, headaches, and other side effects. But certain medications like zofran (anti-nasua) make it better.
2 :
Chemotherapy is also involved in some cases. My mother had breast cancer/lymph nodes removed & had radiation as well as chemotherapy. This was several years ago and the procedures may have changed so be aware that these details may differ from what is common treatment today. It is a heart wrenching process to watch someone you love endure. I think (hope) things have come along much further today. My mom lost most of her hair on her head as well as her eyebrows. Her nausea was daily & severe. She couldn't keep much of any type of food down. Bland foods were best. My mom favored puddings, applesauce, anything which would sort of slide down and, hopefully stay down. Chemotherapy can be administered by injection or orally in pill form (as I recall). Radiation therapy left burns. A silver type of ointment had to be applied to help with that. The treatment was one struggle after another. The emotional effects on the patient must be intense and long lasting. No one can stand in their shoes to truly know how it feels. Support groups are recommended during and after treatment. The Y-Me Foundation is encouraged for those dealing with breast cancer to look better with make-up & hair pieces.

EVEN IF, CANCER IS DETECTED, DO NOT WORRY. IT IS EASILY CURABLE. Cure : Give Acupressure treatment for 2-2 minutes on each of the following points for three times a day : (1) On the circles on the back of palms, for cancer of the breasts. See fig. 118. ( 2 ) On Point Nos. 11 to 15 on both sides of the wrists for cancer of the uterus. ( 3 ) On Point No. 16 on both the hands. ( 4 ) On points of all the endocrine glands i. e. Nos. 3, 4, 8, 25 and 28. (5) Take general Acupressure treatment on all the points twice a day. And on Point No. 26 as a last treatment. (6) Drink 'black tea' one cup in the early morning (see page 187). (7) The use of vaginal douche is a must for the treatment of cancer of the uterus and the breasts. First clean the douche with water containing antiseptic. Take about 1 litre of lukewarm water and add 2 to 4 drops of antiseptic liquid to it. Then fill the douche with this water by pressing the ball. Then keep the plastic part (2 inches) into vagina and press the ball. Vaginal Douche Water will flow inside and clean it. Repeat it for 2/4 times. Such use of Vaginal Douche is also useful when pus cells are found in the urine of a lady i. e. in case of infection in Urine. (8) Make the necessary change in diet as mentioned for the treatment of cancer. (9) In case of more pain on the points on the back of palms and Point No. 16 and also when lumps are found in the breasts, apply North Pole of a (low to medium power) magnet on the lumps only for 3/5 minutes 2 to 3 times a day. "A lady of 50 years was found to have cancer in both the breasts and was advised operation. Instead she took the above treatment and was completely cured within 45 days." "A 40 year old lady, a mother of 4 children, was found to have cancer of the uterus. Cancer was detected even in her left breast. She started the above mentioned Acupressure treatment and continued the same for 60 days. Later on, her husband came and thanked me saying that he got a 'New Wife'-10 years younger. In the same way several cases have been successfully treated." It is observed that in more than two hundred cases where dialysis was being done and when proper improvement was not found, these patients were advised to undergo transplantation of kidney. In all these cases, on examination, damage to kidney was not more than 40 to 50%-and the root cause was found to be cancer of the uterus in females and that of prostate in males. Within 40 to 60 days of Acupressure treatment all the patients got cured. It is, therefore, advisable that before undergoing dialysis and transplantation of kidney to check up about the possibility of cancer. It has been also agreed by the Medical World that if cancer is detected at an early stage, it can be cured. Cure for all types of cancer : To cure all types of cancer the whole body is to be treated, the important organs of regeneration e.g. liver, gall bladder, spleen and kidneys and all the endocrine glands are to be reactivated. Acupressure treatment assists the patient in the process and accelerates recovery by bringing the metabolism of the body in order. Following treatments are suggested : ( 1) Check up the Solar Plexus and put it in order. ( 2 ) Banish salt and spices from the diet. ( 3 ) For ten days, take an enema of water boiled with coffee twice a day. That helps to open up the ducts and remove the toxins from the body. Afterwards, take the enema three times a week for further four weeks. (4 ) In case ducts/lumps have developed, take vapour treatment (as mentioned on page 132), on the ducts and cold packs treatment in the case of cancer of the stomach and uterus page 202. Also apply north pole of magnet on the ducts for 3/5 minutes 2 times a day. It will dissolve the duct. (5) Take concentrated lukewarm water of copper, silver and gold, 3 to 4 glasses, during the day. Boil 20 glasses of water and reduce it to 4 glasses. (6) In diet, have only fresh juices of vegetables as mentioned on page 169 and of fruits like grapes, pomegranate, etc. In the diet, juice of sprouted pulses, beet root, carrot and cabbage should be included. Such a diet helps the patient to gain weight. Eat plenty of salads and honey. ( 7 ) Take Acupressure treatment on all the points twice a day. Also give special extra treatment of 2 minutes on each point of endocrine glands-Point Nos. 3, 4, 8, 14, 15, 16, 25, 28 and 38 (in case of children). After the treatment is taken, take treatment on Point No. 26 of kidneys also. ( 8 ) Practise Pranayam regularly as often as possible. ( 9 ) Take sunbath and if it is not possible, take blue light on the affected part of the body for 8 to 10 minutes. (10) In case of cancer in the mouth, throat and gullet: ( a ) First cure Pyorrhoea, if it is there. If the condition of teeth is bad and the Dentist advises removal of them, please get such teeth removed. ( b ) Take 5 drops of Glycerine Acid Tanic (available in chemist's shop); add little quantity of tur

I'm a brain cancer patient. Tuesday will be my last day of radiation treatment. I'll still have 6 more months at least of chemo (oral treatments) and I had surgery to remove part of my tumor. The surgery went well. I was up and moving a few hours after surgery though I was urged to to be. I really felt find...just achy from the surgery to my head. The expected me to be tired, worn down, possibly lose some or all sight, possibly lose all or some hearing. My mobility could have been dramatically altered, but I was fine...just sore. The radiation has caused me to lose almost all of my hair. I'm more than exhausted all of the time (that comes with an 18 month old and working full time and keeping up a household though). I've recently found myself more emotional. Physically I don't feel as strong-this is supposed to be a combination of chemo and radiation. At first the chemo made me deathly sick to my stomach...throwing up and dry heaving non stop, but once I learned to time my nausea medication correctly it was fine. If you have more questions, feel free to contact me. cashandtaco@yahoo.com

Cancer treatment can be from Iv chemo , radition and also pills. The effects on the individual can vary, from one to the other depending on the drugs and the kind of cancer and the location . For breast cancer patients its pretty intense and they usually are pretty sick with alot of nausea and vomiting and hair lose and weight lose. I have lymphoma and I had a little hair lose and nausea and I gained 30 pounds due to the predisone. Felt like I had the flu at times and tired but after awhile I was okay it usually took about 10 days. Chemo can take several hours at a time and they usually use more then one kind of chemo drug. Best of luck on paper

From my own experience----------found a lump in my breast, had it checked, had a mammogram, biopsy, surgery, chemo and radiation.the first chemo they gave me almost killed me. I spent a couple of days in ICU. But they changed it and I did well. You go to the doctors ( mine is in the hospital) and for a couple hours you sit with this stuff going into you. You can read ,talk, or take a nap. It kills the bad cells but it also kills the good one .I got very sick from it. i could smell things that never bothered me before ,but gagged me then. Fuel and alcohol were the worse. I got staff (not spelled correctly but how it sounds)and had to go to the hospital for several days. I walked in the door at the hospital and got sick The nurses were very kind and tried not to use alcohol around me. Then to radiation for 37 treatments. Everyday except the week ends and hoildays, I had to take it. They fit you to a plastic like thing so each time you go in you will be in the exact position as before to get the radition. It only takes a min. to get it but longer to get you set just right for it.I became very weak and tired very easily for a couple years. In fact I'm now on meds.. to take the hormones out of my body and it has changed my hair from very curly and soft to straight and stiff.I was bald for several weeks but it did grow back------weird. I'm praying that someday I will get off the meds and my hair will come back curly and soft. It's hard to say if I'm still so very tired and weak from the chemo and radiation or because I have sarcoid (that's a condition of the lymph nodes) It was found because the cancer spread to some lymph nodes.IWhen they checked the nodes, both were found in them. I hope this helped you some. There's too much to write here but chemo and radiation affects different people in different ways. I didn't get near as sick as some I know.Yet I was sicker than some I know also. You just can't know until you have to take it. If at all possible avoid it. It sure takes the umph out of you. This happened in 2006 so maybe new things have come along. But it can be brutal trying to keep food down and trying to be friendly. You're so sick you just want to snap and I didn't like that at all.I live alone an d it was doubly hard to survive daily chores. Friends brought some food to me and I ate better, by not having to smell it cooking I think.

In search of nurse/doctor who specializes in cancer treatment

In search of nurse/doctor who specializes in cancer treatment?
My stepfather was just diagnosed with melanoma...I have questions and need to share what we have going on with someone who knows what is happening. Anyone out there???

No - In a specific case such as this one with your family member, you should be discussing the case with the doctors who have all the details and know the patient. These doctors seeing your stepfather know what is happening. It is part of their job to answer your questions - IF you are there in the office when the patient is seen. Strongly advise going with your stepfather when he has appointments with his physicians. It is not a good idea for family members to call the doctors after hours to ask questions that should have been asked at the time of the office visit. Doctors need special permission from the patient to give out information - even to step children. If you are there with your stepfather, it is presumed that patient consent has been given. We on the internet cannot do anything but guess or speculate with inadequate information. People almost never have all the information we would need to answer questions well. What happens is that we get third hand information. Your stepfather tells you what he remembers from the doctor visit. Then you try to relate that information over the internet. Unless you are a physician or nurse, you probably won't have all of the staging details and histopathologic information required. We need a complete medical history plus results of all scans and blood tests plus the pathology report. Giving second opinions or second guessing the primary care providers via the internet is not a good idea for nurses and doctors on this site who have experience in cancer medicine. We should be sharing our experience with specific questions rather than reviewing ongoing cases.

Hi - I'm sorry to hear about your brothers GBM. Carboplatin has a half-life of 1-2 hours initially, and can be effective for up to 10 days. Starting dose is calculated based upon a persons weight, height, and kidney functions. A typical dose for subjects with no previous treatment is 400mg/m2, at one time. Dosing may be increased, depending on the severity of the disease, and the patients reaction to treatment. As with most chemotherapy, this drug can suppress your immune system (bone marrow production of white blood cells). Also, the patient can become thrombocytopenic, and anemic, which is usually temporary. If your brother has a blood test, he might have an increased BUN, and serum creatinine, and liver enzymes may become elevated. Once treatment ends, all of these symptoms usually cease. As I am sure he knows, he can expect to experience GI upset and vomiting for the first 24 hours after dosing administration. Carboplatin is excreted primarily in the urine with 65% of the dose excreted after 12 hours and approximately 70% within 24 hours. All of this information is available on the drug label, or the FDA website. Has his doctor mentioned temozolomide? Good Luck

Treatment for Leukemia (Blood Cancer) According to my Information the following two hospitals - 1. Tata Memorial Hospital, Bombay and 2. Cancer Institute, Adyar, Chennai are the best. You will get best treatment for the disease in these hospitals in India, though other hospitals in other cities are doing it. Tata Memorial have good equipments and doctors facilities and it will be costier comparing to other places. Whereas Adyar Cancer Institute will be cheaper and best treatment also is available. But the problem here is it will have a very crowded and cancer hospital outlook. You can choose any one of these hospitals. Best of luck. -

Cost of lung cancer treatment

Cost of lung cancer treatment?
I'm doing a research paper on lung cancer and I need the average cost of lung cancer treatment and the average cost of treatment from Roswell Parks Cancer Institute. Does anyone know what they are?

This is difficult information to obtain. I doubt you will get a general answer. Which type of lung cancer - small cell or non-small cell ? Surgery is used for "non-small cell types" but not for small cells types. Of course surgery adds greatly to the overall expense - tens of thousands of dollars. The stage of the lung cancer matters too. Is radiation therapy involved? That is tens of thousands of dollars. If chemotherapy is involved - the expense varies greatly depending on which of the many chemotherapy agents /regimens are used. Some of the new ones are very expensive. More tens of thousand of dollars. Costs have been escalating astronomically in the past ten years since I retired from cancer medicine. Pharmaceutical company charges have become out of this world for the newer chemotherapy agents. Greed seems to be rampant at the corporate level. - - - If I had to guess - and this is based on what I have learned from "Dave" on this site - the current cost would be somewhere between $100,000 and $200,000 - or could be higher. The sad part is, we only cure one person in seven (~15%) who has a primary lung carcinoma in the USA despite all of this expense. Much better to prevent them. If people would not smoke cigarettes, about 90% of lung carcinomas could be avoided in the first place. Lung cancers from cigarette smoking cause over 31% of all cancer deaths in the U.S. - and they could have been prevented.

Decision on prostate cancer treatment

Decision on prostate cancer treatment?
My brother is 54 yrs old and was just diagnosed with prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 5. His PSA was 4.25. The biopsy showed that he only had traces of cancer on the right side of his prostate and it was limited to that area. He is in excellent health and very active, and has not shown any signs of any urinary problems. He is considering the treatment option of "watchful waiting". What are your thoughts on this vs possibly robotic surgery? Some doctors prefer surgery when the patient is this young. Thanks for your inputs on this.
Cancer - 8 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Is there any prostate cancer in your family? I think there are many other tests that should be ran with that level of PSA. My first question is: does he have an enlarged protate? A simple urine test can determine if there is a urine tract infection. Either of these can account for a higher level of PSA, which is benign, but the latter can also be cancerous. Once this is decided, the doctor needs to rule out an infection of either the prostate, urethra, bladder or kidneys by using ultrasound. Once these have been ruled out, a biopsy can be performed, usually with a needle. At this point, you should be more informed and know what to do next. I wouldn't let it go, I would have tests ran and if need be, get the biopsy.
2 :
I am a little older than you brother, and my PSA runs "slightly " high, and I have been told, one year I might develop prostate cancer. My feeling just might be ,. "operate and get it the hell over with."
3 :
Watchful waiting is usually done in the case of older men where surgery may be risky due to other health problems. For a 54 yr old surgery is probably a better option. As you mention robotic surgery this is a good option because the recovery would be faster than traditional open surgery. Talk to the surgeon and find out about the surgery, the risks vs. benefits before you make a decision. Good luck!
4 :
Urologists are surgeons and will push robotic surgery. That is old school. Look into seed implantation. Do not do watchful waiting, in my opinion. This is where I went: http://www.dattoli.com I was diagnosed at 49 with no symptoms.
5 :
I was 59 and elected the surgery. The PSA is only valuable if you have a base line. Mine went from 1.5 to 4.5 in a year. You mentioned Gleason of 5 mine was 8. The Biopsies did not show all of my cancer. After they removed it they found cancer in more areas that the biopsies missed. I had the surgery last July and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Recovery time is a pain. However any treatment other than surgery gives it a chance to spread. If it's contained in the prostate and you remove it it's gone. I've had 2 PSA test since surgery and both were 0 Yeaaa. Doctor said has to stay 0 for 4 years to be cancer free/
6 :
First: what is the stage of his cancer? Is it T1c? Or is it palbable? What previous surgery has he had? Careful with robotic. There's a lot of hype out there. Focus on the surgeon, not the machine. And you're doing a good thing by supporting him. It's important and helps with the anxiety.
7 :
Print and give to bro.Tell bro to watch and wait.Do not rush into any treatment. What is suggested below is almost a cure.Do the exercises as suggested and you will notice improvement in the third (maybe second) PSA test onwards. Cancer hates oxygen and cannot live in a high-oxygen environment. If you want to supplement the medical treatment you receive(or not receive) with some alternative therapy then this is for you. You need to help your body to build up your immune system. The breathing exercises - pranayam is a holistic approach creating extra oxygen supply in the body and will slowly help with the health problem.Do the pranayam to see the benefits.Build up your timing slowly and after four weeks at the suggested maximum duration you will start to notice benefits gradually. What is known:Do the pranayam and reap the health benefit. How it works in the body is not known รข€“ but people may build their own theory. The small print: Keep doing pranayam after you are better for minimum 30 minutes a day for rest of life to maintain health. People who have been treated successfully, should do pranayam as well, as there is a chance of recurrence. Monitor your conditions/results regularly and it will help you and others observe the progress.List existing conditions with any levels/numbers time spent on toilet seat,weight,BP,dental/eye/ear conditions including eye prescription numbers, sleep problems, blood results etc. The pranayam techniques: Bhastrika - Take a long deep breath into the lungs(chest not tummy) via the nose and then completely breathe out through the nose.Duration upto 5 minutes. Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for upto 30 minutes twice a day.(Max 60 min/day) Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently. Anulom Vilom - Deep Breath-in through left nostril keeping right nostril closed then - Breath-out through right nostril keeping left nostril closed then -Deep Breath-in through right nostril keeping left nostril closed then - Breath-out through left nostril keeping right nostril closed and repeat this cycle for upto 30 minutes twice a day(maximum 60 min/day). Bhramri Pranayam -Close eyes. Close ears with thumb, index finger on forehead, and rest three fingers on base of nose touching eyes. Breathe in through nose. And now breathe out through nose while humming like a bee. Duration : 5 to 10 times Only by doing you will benefit and will feel good that you can do something to help the body.Copy and print this to improve your technique and stay focused. This is simplified pranayam for everyone and you do not have to go to classes to learn. This is for life, unlike short term classes where you do it in the class then stop when classes are over.

With a Gleason Score of 5 and a PSA of 4.25, "Watchful Waiting" or "Active Surveillance" as it is also called, is a valid choice. prostate cancer is a very slow growing cancer. Many men rush into treatment as soon as they are diagnosed because they fear that the cancer has spread outside the prostate and they want to contain it. Your brother has time and his age on his side. Use this time to become informed about the disease, the treatments available, and the side-effects of those treatments. Active Surveillance requires careful monitoring of PSA levels and further biopsies to determine the rate of growth of the tumor, do not make the mistake of ignoring the problem. As long as the tumor is organ confined and slow growing there is no need to take action. Robotic Surgery is an excellent choice for your brother given his age and his general good health, when he is ready for it. In the hands of a very skilled surgeon the outcome can be superior to the traditional surgical approach. The key is finding a surgeon who has done hundreds of these procedures, the learning curve for Robotic Assisted Surgery is very high, and the best results with minimal side-effects are with the Doctors who have the most experience.
