Because cancer can be considered a disease of mitosis. Cancer cells can be created by errors in cell reproduction, leading to more cancerous cells which go through the process of mitosis and reproduce, and so forth. A tumor can be thought of as cancer cells dividing (mitosis) and growing out of control. Some of the cancer therapies being researched today are those that prevent cancer cell reproduction, hence the process of mitosis is of central importance in those studies.
