My mom's cancer may have spread to her leg bone and liver. What treatment options does she have?
My mom, a smoker aged 61, had a kidney removed some two years ago because of kidney cancer. A recent CT scan has shown signs that cancer may have spread to her leg bone and liver. I am anxious to know what effective treatment options are available.

The answer to your question requires more information. What specific type of cancer did she have in the kidney? Did she have additional therapy at the time of diagnosis besides removal of her kidney? Have they done a biopsy to confirm that the areas of concern in her bone and liver are truly cancer? What do you mean by "effective"? If the cancer truly has spread, it is then metastatic and the prognosis is usually pretty bad. The therapy is usually directed at stopping the growth of the tumors and easing any pain. This can be accomplished with radiation and/or chemotherapy depending on the type of cancer. In most cases, there is no cure.

Liver cancer can be removed by surgery if it hasn't got too big. Otherwise they control it with chemotherapy.

Based on your description, your Mom's primary kidney cancer may have metastasized into her bones and liver. A pathological assessment of tissue from the effected areas and appropriate blood work may be the next steps. If indeed cancer is present at these sites, then it may be treated through surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of methods. Your Mom's oncologist will discuss her prognosis and treatment options with her. Best wishes to you and your family.

I work for the American Cancer Society. Call 18002272345 to talk to someone about it 24/7. This is what we would talk to you about. Advanced Cancer: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/CRI_2_3x.asp?dt=79 Bone Metastasis: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/CRI_2_3x.asp?dt=66 Kidney Cancer: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/CRI_2_3x.asp?dt=22 Oh and by the way, not many people understand this but "no matter where a cancer may spread, it is always named for the place where it started. For example, breast cancer that has spread to the liver is still called breast cancer, not liver cancer. Prostate cancer that has spread to the bone is metastatic prostate cancer, not bone cancer." http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/content/CRI_2_4_1x_What_Is_Cancer.asp?sitearea= Just so you know not to look up info about liver cancer or bone cancer. You'll need to look at info about kidney cancer that has spread to those places. It's treated very differently than cancer that actually began in the liver or bone. Hope this helps.
