Has anyone heard of every 1000 soda pop tops that a child will receive a free cancer treatment

Has anyone heard of every 1000 soda pop tops that a child will receive a free cancer treatment?
My job is helping out a school that has a child with cancer. They are collecting soda can pop tops, every 1000 is said to give the child a free cancer treatment. I did some research, and Snopes.com says this is a false statement. Has anyone heard truth in this program of collecting pop tops for free treatments. I was hoping there was was truth to it, but I just don't see it happening. Update: I have contacted the Ronald Mcdonald House Director. She has verified that the 1000 pop tops for free treatments is an Urban Legend.

I've heard that it's a scam as well. Perhaps you could suggest a penny drive instead.

never heard of saving them for cancer, though we've saved them for kidney disease for some time. I assumed the just got sold at recycle wieght, a milkjug full can by worth more than a hundred bucks. Plus with poptabs you don't have to worry as much about ant's and stuff. If they where like proofs of purchase maybe that corporation could be backing it up with the funds. It's possible that some company could be adding the funds for every so many pop tabs or something as a way to get the community involved. Otherwise .................

I don't know anything about receiving a free treatment but if you check with your local Ronald McDonald house(or the one nearest you if you don't live in a city), they will tell you that they collect the tabs and recycle the aluminum and use the money to maintain the house which is used as a "home away from home" for people to stay in while their children are receiving cancer treatments in the hospital.

No, I'm sorry it's not true. I know several families of children with cancer who have been successful holding golf tournaments to raise money for research. They do recycle those tabs and could be using the funds to pay for expenses. Don't worry, no child will be turned away from the treatment they need. Most of my wife's patience are on medicare/ medicate. Good for you trying to help!

Check with your local McDonalds and they should be able to tell you where the nearest Ronald McDonald House is located. They do collect pop tabs for recycling. You can even get little houses that are for collecting the tabs.
