How can we afford treatment for breast cancer?
My mom recently told me that she has infiltrating ductal carcinoma. Up till now, there was no indication of anything wrong. What terrifies me the most is the fact that my dad has been unemployed for about a year, my mom has a low paying job, and my family does not have much money right now. I have no clue how we will afford treatment. I know that asking this question won't help; it won't give us any money or way to deal... but if anyone has advice, please give it.

Your mom may qualify for Medicaid if the expenses are high. Check it out.

The billing office at the hospital will have a list of places that help. Check with your pastor at church and with the american cancer society and the Susan Koman Foundation. You may find other cancer organizations on the internet. Good luck to all of you through this difficult time.

I am sorry that your family lives in America. The United States is the only developed country in the world without government-managed low cost or free health care for all of its citizens. If your Mom lived in Britain, France, or Canada then all of her treatment would be absolutely free. Over 50 million Americans have no insurance whatsoever. Another 50 million are seriously under-insured. Approximately 500,000 families declare bankruptcy every year because of unpayable medical expenses. America's for-profit health insurance system is directly responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people every year. Sorry for the digression and now back to your question. Contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 and request advice on treatment funding options. The ACS maintains a comprehensive database of cancer treatment resources which they can refer you to. Additional options include contacting your state's Department of Health and speaking with the Billing Department of the hospital treating your Mom. They may be able to refer you to funding sources in your state. Best wishes that your Mom has a good long term outcome.

You could ask a library for a list of the local resources that help the poor, like for food boxes, free medical clinics, utility bill payments, rental assistance, cancer support groups, etc. The state welfare office might help some. Also, you or your dad might want to check out career ideas with a college career counseling office to get a fresh perspective on work and what type of career to pursue. Also, God can help you live a better life if you want Him to help you. You can have a personal relationship with God by saying the prayer below. God is our Creator, all-knowing, all-powerful, eternal, holy, love. God loves us and sent us His Son, Jesus Christ, so we can go to heaven if we know and follow Him. Forever means without end -- time on and on without death. Forever is what happens after we die. Either we go to heaven and be with God forever, or we go to hell which is very bad and painful forever. The good people who are saved believers in Jesus Christ go to heaven. Some people find faith in God when they realize the beauty in the world is made by God. Evolution can't explain the world's natural beauty, for example, the parks in the world, animals, flowers, peacocks, sunsets, butterflies, rainbows, etc. After you have your faith on, you can pray a sinner's prayer to be a born-again Christian. I'm Lutheran and I like the Baptist churches too. You could try out a Christian church and also see about their weekly Bible study group to learn about God's will for your life. You can pray to God about your daily life.
