Conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy have been tested and proven in double-blind clinical trials. They're not perfect but we know, because they've been tested and proven, that they save many lives and prolong many, many more. Alternative treatments are treatments that have never been tested in that way, and have never been proven to be effective against any cancer. If they had been, they wouldn't be 'alternative medicine', they would just be medicine. Alternative, in this context, is just another word for unproven. Sadly, wherever there is cancer there is an unscrupulous charlatan eager to make money from desperate and vulnerable people by selling them ineffective and sometimes dangerous alternative 'cures'. No treatment at all? Barring a miracle - and you know how rare they are - that means certain prolonged and painful death. An excellent site for information on alternative treatments is http://www.quackwatch.com/ This article may be of interest: http://www.quackwatch.org/00AboutQuackwatch/altseek.html

While my son was going through "traditional treatment", there was a little boy who lives 4 doors down from us who was diagnoses with a brain tumor. His parents took him to my son's doctor and did not like the prognoses. It was a 50/50 chance of survival. They chose "alternative medicine".After about 6 months, I convinced the mother to please see our doctor again. They did. Unfortunately the tumor had enlarged so much, that there was now nothing they could do to save him, only help to keep him comfortable. And in my grandmothers case with breast cancer, she did nothing for approximately 3 years after being diagnosed, and then starting treatment at my mother's insistence, it was too far gone and we lost her witin a year. In my opinion, traditional is the best so far. My son was not to live through the night let alone the first 3 weeks in the hospital and 9 months of chemo treastments. It is a horrible thing to watch a family member go through, but it saved my son and has prolonged my brother life while dealing with colon cancer.

Traditional approaches have their place and surgery can be necessary. But there are lifestyle centers that have had great success in curing cancers. Google Gerson Therapy for starters. They often work with patients that have been sent home to die.

I write about cancer for the website Having Fun After Cancer (www.after-cancer.com). Every day I receive tons of email about 'alternative' therapies. So far not one has been proven. Yes, very, very occasionally someone goes into remission for no apparent reason - but for every person this happens to, hundreds more get worse - but you never hear about these. You do hear about chemo, radiotherapy etc. because although these can be horrible with their side effects, they are proven to work for the majority of cases. On after-cancer.com there is mention of books such as Trick or Treatment - which is written by reputable scientists who de-bunk most alternative treatments - in a readable and amusing way. Sadly, many people may use alternative treatments as a crutch, or because they can't face up to the conventional treatments. Verite R
